A medical leave of absence is a leave category that applies to employees who face certain medical conditions that affect their mental or physical conditions making them unfit to perform their day-to-day activities related to the job. This type of leave is usually unpaid. The FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993) agrees to 12 weeks of Medical Leave for employees. Employers that provide paid Medical Leave could require employees to use their accrued leave as part of the 12-week period. The FMLA allows Medical leave of absence for any serious health condition that makes employees unable to perform their job duties.
An HR software with leave management capabilities allows the creation of leave types such as Medical Leave of Absence. This provides the ability for HR departments to easily track and manage the leave, while the HR software processes the payroll based on the configured pay policies.
